That is the first suggestion on how to prepare for this year’s election from Ben Witherington, who has assembled an evangelical’s voting guide.
Here are the rest of his ideas:
- Vote. Don’t stay home because you’re frustrated.
- Don’t be a one-issue voter.
- Decide how much character weighs into your decision.
- Prioritize your issues and evaluate the candidates based on your priorities.
- Be smart enough to discern when a candidate is not honest or forthright about his/her views.
- Don’t vote on gut instinct but on evaluation, discussion, thought.
I’ll add one: remember that this election is more than the presidential position. We’re choosing Representatives, Senators, governors, and more. Be sure you read all of Ben’s thoughts. They'll give you something more to think about.

Hi. I did read his post, Kathy. Most of his suggestions were well taken, but I do have a problem with his position on this. But he did make us evangelicals think, I will say that. One thing I liked was that most of the discussion on the comment thread was pretty polite compared to much of what I've been reading in many areas of the internet. For the most part, these comments were constructive and courtesy, even the ones I didn't agree with.
I guess you're about to make your five hundredth post. Unbelievable. You are to be congratulated!
Maxine, thanks for taking a look. I agree, I didn't agree with all his points but I thought his idea that we as evangelicals need to well-informed was good. And his article is a great springboard for discussion. I'm praying with you and for you for the upcoming election. Kathy
