I AM = eimi (I exist-always. No beginning or end.). John’s gospel has two sets of “I am” sayings of Jesus. One set declares Jesus’ divinity:
`I am, who is speaking to you.'
John 4:26
They were afraid; and he said to them,
`I am, be not afraid;'
John 6:19-20
Jesus, therefore, said to them, ‘When you may lift up
the Son of Man then you will know that I am.’
John 8:28
Jesus said to them, `Truly, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming--I am;'
John 8:58
`From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that,
when it may come to pass, you may believe that I am.’
John 13:19
`Whom do ye seek?' they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;'
Jesus said to them, `I am.”
John 18:4-5

The "I am" statement that first comes to mind and has always sorta puzzled me was when God told Moses to tell the pharaoh "I am that I am." Makes a little more sense to me now that you explained that statement a little more.

Ann, you made the perfect connection. That's why the religious leaders were so agitated: they understood that Jesus was using the name of God: I AM, just as God told it to Moses. It's the idea that God has no beginning or end, that no one created him, that he is the eternal always.
In our English language, "I am" is either an answer to a question, "Are you going to the store?" "I am."
Or if I were to just say "I am." You as the listener would think... you are ...what? Hungry, tired, sleepy, etc.
"I AM" just doesn't have the same impact in English!!
